Escape from New York (1981)

ATTENTION. You are now entering Manhattan Island Prison. You have the option to self terminate if you wish. There is only one rule: once you go in, you do not come out.

What a premise! The USA has gone to shit, and the five boroughs have turned into an enclosed supermax. When the president crashes there and taken hostage, it’s up to ex-war hero and new convict Snake Plissken to infiltrate the prisoners and the world they made.

The eyepatch sporting Snake is one of our favorite ever anti-heroes and helped establish Russell as a viable lead. He, along with Carpenter’s A Number-1 plot/setting/soundtrack go together perfectly, and it’s easy to see why the two became such an acclaimed cult combo.

As for the sequel, we suggest you reject the transfer and finish your sentence on the east coast.

Directed by John Carpenter.
Starring Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, and Adrienne Barbeau.
99 Minutes – Rated R
