American History X (1998)

Brutal. Heavy-handed. Blunt. Flawed. Powerful. Ridiculous. American History X is all these things.

A pair of brothers become wrapped up in Neo-Nazi culture following their father’s death. But after a stint in prison, the older brother questions the path he is sending his family down

This tale of an intelligent man and his warped, hateful mind, has staying power. Edward Norton overshadows a great all-around cast with a performance that makes a career . But for every fantastic scene (the family dinner, curbside savagery), director Kaye drowns us in slow motion or the ludicrous (the race vs. race basketball game).

Despite its many shortcomings, American History X continues to be discussed and strike a chord with audiences. That is what our genre is all about.

Directed by Tony Kaye.
